I always find it funny how come folks think that "Loud" means what - fast? smart? horrible?
I never object to the noise a bike makes but when I read your description of a mangled muffler - well it is just something that turns someones crank for some reason.

the white space = well since I first started riding a Savage four years back, I have watched the debate on spacer removal go back and forth. I have not removed the spacer on my 89, but I have learned to modify my riding style - when throttling down, it is always fully off - no 1/4 throttle as the bike slows - and in the largest measure I get an occassional whufff - but I have not had a back fire crack for a couple of years with this throttle management process. So yep =- take it out - or yep leave it in = for me removal was not necessary.

Vis-a-vis the 4th-5th shift issue, this also has been discussed but not at much length here. If I remember correctly, the thread suggested that syntheic was not going to solve the problem. You might want to check the clutch adjustment - and because of the discussions previously - scan back about a year and see if you can find the thread on the 4/5 issue - changing to synth might be worth a try

Regardless - welcome to the forum - and enjoy your Savage

Keep the rubber side down
